Eyüp Sultan-moskén
Istanbul har alltid varit en viktig handelsport i Mellanöstern efter Trojas fall på 1200-talet f.Kr. Staden Byzas utvecklades till Konstantinopel efter att Konstantin den Store flyttade Roms huvudstad till halvön som vaktar ingången till Bosporen. Den nya romerska huvudstaden blev omedelbart den mäktigaste staden under romartiden, vilket lockade till sig olika belägringsförsök genom historien. Under islams expansion belägrades staden flera gånger. Den första arabiska belägringen ägde rum på 670-talet när den arabiska arméns fanbärare föll under kampanjen. Ansari betyder hjälpare på arabiska, och Al-Ansari var en av profeten Muhammeds anhängare under migrationen till Medina år 622. Hans fortsatta stöd varade fram till hans död, då han avled av en svår sjukdom under den första arabiska kampanjen mot Konstantinopel. Han begravdes vid stadsmurarna i Konstantinopel, och Mehmet Erövraren sägs ha sett Al-Ansaris grav i en dröm. Efter att ha lokaliserat graven påbörjade Sultan Mehmed II byggandet av moskén, som dock inte är den struktur vi ser idag.
Eyup Sultan-moskén
Den första moskén byggdes på samma plats år 1458 efter att Sultan Mehmed Erövraren hittade begravningsplatsen för Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari. I slutet av 1700-talet bad Sultan III Selim den kejserliga arkitekten Grand Sinan att återuppbygga moskén, som tros ha skadats av en jordbävning. Grand Sinan slutförde projektet år 1800, två år efter sultanens begäran. Sinan använde denna gång barockstil och skapade en mycket elegant struktur, precis som han gjort hundratals gånger i sina projekt. Förutom sitt andliga värde är Eyup Sultan-moskén mycket viktig för osmansk arkitektur. Osmanska sultaner kröntes i Eyup Sultan-moskén.
